Alcohol & Drug Addiction in the Columbine, Colorado Area

Addiction can be a brutal disease, partly because it affects nearly every aspect of someone’s life.

It can ravage a person’s finances. It can take a serious toll on mental and physical health. It can devastate social and family relationships. And it can make it feel like you’re losing control of your life and who you always wanted to be.

Unfortunately, many suffering addicts who want to get help simply don’t know where to go to find it. In a recent national study, an astounding 19% of addicts who wanted to get clean didn’t know where to find the support they needed.

Fortunately, Columbine, CO has plenty of addiction resources to make the journey to recovery even easier. From overdose help and social support groups to professional treatment programs, residents of this Colorado town have a variety of options to help them get sober.

This comprehensive guide takes a closer look at these local resources below.

Set in Colorado's Jefferson County and partly in Arapahoe County, the town of Columbine is a part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Statistical Area. Columbine is actually a census-designated place, which means that it has not been officially incorporated into a municipality. In 2010, the U.S, census counted 24,280 people living in Columbine. Columbine's zip codes are 80123 and 80128.

And unfortunately, this area and the state in general is struggling with a very serious substance abuse problem.

Substance Abuse & Addiction in Colorado

The first step to a true and lasting recovery from addiction or alcoholism should almost always be a professional detox program, followed by a professional rehab program. The two parts of this start to recovery address the physical and psychological substance dependence, respectively.

Rates of illegal drug use and of the abuse of alcohol have been shown to be going up in the state of Colorado. 18% of adults get drunk on a monthly basis, and 11.3% engage in the use of illegal drugs.

Here are a few more statistics that show just how much of a problem substance abuse has become in the state. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA):

Rates of alcohol use among adolescents in Colorado has been above the national average from 2011 to 2015.

  • 2011-2012
    • National Average: 13.1%
    • Colorado: 13.4% (0.4% higher)
  • 2012-2013
    • National Average: 12.2%
    • Colorado: 13.1% (0.9% higher)
  • 2013-2014
    • National Average: 11.6%
    • Colorado: 14.3% (2.7% higher)
  • 2014-2015
    • National Average: 10.6%
    • Colorado: 12.5% (1.9% higher)

From 2014 to 2015, an annual average of about 52,000 adolescents aged 12-17 used alcohol in the past month.

Heroin is increasingly becoming more of a problem for Colorado. From 2013 to 2014, rates of heroin use in the state were about equal to the national average (0.29% vs. 0.30%). But from 2014 to 2015, the state average jumped by 0.09% - about 0.05% higher than the national average. This translates to about 17,000 Colorado residents using heroin that year.

Colorado has consistently had higher rates of alcoholism compared to the national average.

  • 2011-2012
    • National Average: 6.6%
    • Colorado: 8.1% (1.5% higher)
  • 2012-2013
    • National Average: 6.7%
    • Colorado: 7.5% (0.8% higher)
  • 2013-2014
    • National Average: 6.5%
    • Colorado: 7.5% (1% higher)
  • 2014-2015
    • National Average: 6.1%
    • Colorado: 7.5% (1.4% higher)

From 2014 to 2015, an annual average of about 335,000 Colorado residents were struggling with alcoholism.

Substance Abuse & Addiction in Columbine & the Denver Metro Area

Within the Denver Metro Area (of which Columbine is a part), the rates of substance abuse are particularly high. According to the 2017 National Drug Early Warning System from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA):

In 2015, the Denver Metro Area (DMA) had consistently higher rates of emergency room visits involving almost every drug category compared to the statewide rates.

  • Alcohol
    • Statewide Rate: 1,156.42 per 100,000 residents
    • DMA: 1,858.74 per 100,000 residents (702.32 higher
  • Cocaine
    • Statewide Rate: 1.15 per 100,000 residents
    • DMA: 1.48 per 100,000 residents (3.3 higher
  • Stimulant
    • Statewide Rate: 5.48 per 100,000 residents
    • DMA: 6 per 100,000 residents (0.52 higher
  • Heroin
    • Statewide Rate: 10.92 per 100,000 residents
    • DMA: 12.74 per 100,000 residents (1.82 higher

2015 Denver Metro Area overdose deaths were also higher on average than the statewide rates as well.

  • Cocaine
    • Statewide Rate: 1.1 per 100,000 residents
    • DMA: 2.9 per 100,000 residents (1.8 higher)
  • Methamphetamine
    • Statewide Rate: 2.5 per 100,000 residents
    • DMA: 5.1 per 100,000 residents (2.6 higher)
  • Heroin
    • Statewide Rate: 2.9 per 100,000 residents
    • DMA: 4.7 per 100,000 residents (1.8 higher)
  • Prescription Opioids
    • Statewide Rate: 6 per 100,000 residents
    • DMA: 7.6 per 100,000 residents (1.6 higher)
  • Benzodiazepines
    • Statewide Rate: 1.8 per 100,000 residents
    • DMA: 5.1 per 100,000 residents (3.3 higher)

It’s clear, then, that Colorado and specifically the Denver area (including Columbine) have serious problems with substance abuse.

And that’s why it’s so important to know about and understand the many addiction resources that the Columbine area has to offer.

Overdose Help & Support

One of the most serious threats of a substance abuse problem is the risk of a fatal overdose. When it comes to addictive drugs like heroin, alcohol, and cocaine, the body can only take so much at one time. And when that threshold is passed, it can lead to life-threatening symptoms like:

  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Respiratory Depression
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Organ Failure

And in recent years, national overdose rates have been climbing faster than most people realize.

In 1999, 16,489 people in the U.S. died from a drug overdose. That number has since climbed to an astounding 70,237 deaths in 2017 according to NIDA. That’s an increase of nearly 326%.

In fact, the problem has gotten so out of hand that drug overdose is now the number one killer of Americans under the age of 50.

And within the Denver Metro Area which includes Columbine, the rate of dying from an overdose is especially high. In 2015, for example, nearly 18 out of every 100,000 residents died from a drug overdose.

Knowing how to spot the signs of an overdose, then, is critical. And just as important is knowing just what to do to help.

The first step in treating an overdose is first recognizing the symptoms. However, not all drugs create the same physical and mental problems during an overdose. And that can make spotting the red flags early on more difficult than most people might think.

Below is a breakdown of the most common signs of an overdose for some of the most widely abused drugs. The more you know about each, the more easily you’ll be able to spot the signs quickly and get the proper emergency medical help.

Alcohol – Some physical and mental signs of alcohol poisoning to be on the lookout for include:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Heroin – In most cases, symptoms of a heroin overdose include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Cocaine – A cocaine overdose can cause a number of health side effects, including:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Crystal MethOverdosing on crystal meth can result in the following symptoms:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Prescription Opioids – A prescription opioid overdose can cause symptoms like:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Benzodiazepines – Some signs of an overdose on benzodiazepines like Ativan or Valium include:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

Overdoses can be life-threatening if left untreated by a professional. That’s why contacting emergency services as soon as possible is the key to survival.

As such, if you recognize the signs of an overdose listed above, call 9-1-1 immediately. Simply hoping for the best and waiting can (and does) end up costing lives each and every day.

If you are alone and do have to leave the side of the victim (even for a minute to call 911), you should place them into what’s known as the “recovery position.” This body placement will help prevent complications, some of which might be deadly.

The operators at 911 may ask several questions about the victim. These might include:

  • What is the patient’s condition?
  • What drugs did they take and how much?
  • When did they last take them?
  • Are they medications that they had a prescription for?
  • What is the patient’s age, sex, height, and weight?

The answers to these questions will help the operator determine the next course of action to take while waiting for an ambulance. They may, for example, instruct you to begin performing CPR or induce vomiting. It’s important that you follow their instructions completely and don’t administer care until they tell you to do so. Treating them improperly without the right expertise can actually make the situation worse in some cases.

When the ambulance arrives, the victim will likely be transported to the hospital for more extensive care. Emergency service workers might also use overdose-reversing medications such as naloxone to help reduce the damage.

In the end, there are three important things to remember, each of which is vital to the victim's recovery.

  • Contact emergency services as soon as possible.
  • Be 100% honest with the operators about the situation.
  • Always follow the instructions of the emergency service workers.

12-Step Support Meetings

Within the Columbine area, there are plenty of support meetings to help addicts overcome their substance abuse problems. The most well-known type of support meetings is 12-step groups. Some of the most popular include:

  • Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
  • Narcotics Anonymous (NA)
  • Al-Anon
  • Alateen
  • Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA)

All of these groups and their many other offshoots follow what are known as the 12 Steps to Recovery. These steps guide addicts to learn how to ask for help, take stock of their lives, embrace a life of brutal honesty, and ultimately start on a new path towards sobriety.

The 12-step groups are popular for a number of reasons.

First, they’re entirely anonymous. Members don’t have to join some sort of registry or even give their full names at meetings. This can go a long way towards recovery, especially given the stigma surrounding addiction.

Second, 12-step groups are 100% free. Members and visitors pay no dues and have no obligations other than the ones they put on themselves.

Third, these meetings are numerous and are found in every state across the U.S. Many cities host meetings, and even smaller townships hold several get-togethers a week. If you want to attend a meeting, chances are there's one happening nearby.

And finally, the 12-step methodology is backed up by science to help support sobriety. In fact, 12-Step Facilitation Therapy is one of the eight research-based behavioral therapies endorsed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Luckily, there are plenty of 12-step meetings in the Columbine area. And given the city’s close proximity to Denver, there are countless dates, times, and locations to choose from.

Created by men who came together seeking a way out of alcoholism, it was AA or Alcoholics Anonymous, that first discovered the 12 steps that would later become the foundation of so many other recovery programs.

It was first founded in 1935 in Akron, Ohio by Bill W., a stockbroker, and Dr. Bob S., a local surgeon.

And since its first days, AA has grown enormously. In 2017, this group had an estimated almost 2.1 million members and more than 120 thousand different meetings around the world.

Given just how close Columbine is to Denver, there is an incredible number of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings taking place nearby. Below are just some of the closest organized by time and day of the week.

Youth Meeting,

Founded about two decades after AA, Narcotics Anonymous or NA took their innovative 12 steps and applied them to problems with other substances. Any addict seeking sobriety is welcomed by NA. That includes people addicted to heroin, cocaine, meth, marijuana, and even alcohol itself.

It isn’t any wonder, then, that this group is also pretty popular all over the world. In fact, NA estimates that their members hold nearly 67 thousand meetings each week in 139 different countries.

While not as big as AA, Narcotics Anonymous still has a lot of different meetings taking place in Columbine. In fact, there are several in the area every day of the week. Below are some of the closest.

Living with and loving an addict can put enormous strain on a relationship. The distrust, betrayal, and emotional abuse can poison marriages, tear apart families, and alienate friends.

Recognizing the need for a support system for the loved ones of addicts, Al-Anon parallels AA and NA in its use of the 12 steps but is designed for the rest of the family. Those touched by the addiction of another can find help and guidance here.

Some of the issues that friends and family members can find support on here include:

Al-Anon meetings aren’t quite as easy to come by as AA or NA groups in some places. But fortunately, the Columbine area has plenty to choose from. Below are some of the closest, organized by proximity to Columbine.

Following on the logic of Al-Anon, Alateen is another 12-step program that is specifically for teenagers with addicted parents. Since this age is such a formative time during life, there are many problems and feelings that are specific to teenage years. And that can leave many teens feeling left out when attending groups made up only of adults.

Alateen helps connect younger friends and family members of alcoholics so that they can feel more comfortable sharing their experiences. Plus, a group tailored to their specific needs makes it a much more effective form of support.

Adults who are in Al-Anon lead these meetings while teens draw strength and support from others who are in similar situations.

Unfortunately, there aren’t a whole lot of Alateen meetings to choose from, especially compared to other 12-step groups. That being said, there are still a handful of meetings taking place in the Columbine area.

Growing up in an alcoholic household can have lifelong consequences. Some of these consequences include:

  • Having difficulty enjoying experiences or having fun
  • Seeking approval in unhealthy ways
  • Low self-esteem
  • Higher rates of depression
  • More prone to avoiding conflict
  • Poor emotion expression

One group, Adult Children of Alcoholics or ACoA, uses the 12 steps to address these consequences and help these grownup victims move on to lead a happy, fulfilling life.

There are a fair amount of ACoA meetings taking place within and around Columbine, Colorado. Below is a list of some of the closest ones.

Online 12-Step Support Groups

Aside from in-person support groups like the ones listed above, there are even more resources to be found online. For instance, all five of the above-mentioned organizations have a presence online:

Alcoholics Anonymous Online Groups

Narcotics Anonymous Online Groups (select “Web” under “Country” in “NA Meeting Search”)

Al-Anon Online Groups

Alateen Online Groups

Adult Children of Alcoholics Online Groups

Other 12-Step Support Alternatives

Not everyone will find that 12-step groups mesh with their views on how recovery should go. Maybe it’s the religious/spiritual component of the group. Or perhaps they just don’t see the value in the 12 steps as a whole.

No matter the reason, it’s important to remember that there are still plenty of 12-step alternatives out there to be aware of. So even if the 12-steps don’t work for you, you can still get the support you need to recover and live a happy, sober life

SMART Recovery – This group is a bit more structured than 12-step groups. Rather than being led by members themselves, SMART Recovery uses certified instructors to guide members in recovery-focused strategies. They also tend to take a more scientific approach and change their techniques based on advances in the field.

Secular Organizations for Sobriety (SOS) – Some recovering addicts don’t believe that religion or spirituality have a place in recovery. And for them, there’s Secular Organizations for Sobriety. Phrases like “higher power” and “God” aren’t used in their teaching methods and, instead, members are taught to tap into their own self-reliance rather than the power of a deity.

Women for Sobriety – While 12-step programs do have sex-specific meetings, Women for Sobriety caters exclusively to women struggling with a substance addiction. It’s also secular in nature, meaning like SOS, it is a non-religious group.

LifeRing – Another non-religious alternative to 12-step programs, LifeRing is abstinence-based and is self-directed. They offer face-to-face group meetings around the country that are completely free to the public.

Moderation Management – The only non-abstinence-based group in this list, Moderation Management focuses on problem drinkers, not necessarily full-blown alcoholics. They teach that self-management of drinking behaviors doesn’t mean you have to put the bottle down entirely. And even if someone is prone to alcoholism, they can still learn to control their drinking before it develops into a substance use disorder.

Getting Professional Help: The Best Path Towards Recovery

While support groups can be instrumental in maintaining sobriety, the true key to achieving sobriety lies in a professional addiction treatment program. These programs provide the scientific knowledge and proven expertise needed to kick addiction to the curb for good.

Think of it like the foundation for recovery that all other efforts are later built on.

But what goes into an addiction treatment program? What kinds of programs are there? And how do you know which programs are really right for you?

Unfortunately, many addicts think that they can take on their substance abuse problem alone. They think that while it might be tough, with enough willpower, they can conquer their addiction without the help of anyone else.

And while that might be true in some cases, the science just doesn’t support it. The overwhelming majority of addicts need the support and guidance of a professional program to get clean, and to stay clean. On top of that, trying to overcome addiction alone can actually lead to some very serious health complications too – some of which can even be deadly.

Below are some of the most notable benefits of partnering with a professional program. And as you’ll see, they make quitting drugs or alcohol significantly easier than going it alone.

Better Odds At Recovery – The rate of relapse for addiction is intimidating – about 40 to 60% of users end up relapsing. Part of this is because many addicts just don’t get the full spectrum of treatment they need to stay sober.

According to NIDA’s Principles of Effective Treatment, a quality recovery program addresses multiple needs and problems of an addict, not just substance abuse. Underlying mental disorders, past emotional trauma, ineffective coping skills, and so much more are all identified and treated during a professional program. And when done right, this approach can lead to a far better chance at staying sober down the line.

Access to Expertise – The physicians, staff, and guidance counselors of a professional treatment program have studied and put into practice the very best methods for supporting recovery. And with each new patient, they’re refining these methods again and again. By partnering with a professional program, addicts are putting their recovery in the hands of the best authorities in the field. And when you compare that to guessing and checking by quitting alone, an actual program is far more qualified.

Medical Monitoring – There are a host of dangerous complications that can result during recovery, especially during detox. These can include seizures, heart issues, dangerous mental disturbances, dehydration, malnutrition, and aspiration. A quality professional program will monitor the health of patients 24/7. And best of all, they’ll have the knowledge necessary to both prevent and treat these complications should they ever develop.

Access to Addiction Medications – There are a variety of prescription medications available to professional programs to help treat addiction. These include Vivitrol, Suboxone, and methadone just to name a few. On top of that, a professional program may also use symptom-specific drugs like benzodiazepines or gabapentin to make recovery much easier on the patient.

Connection to Aftercare Programs – Addiction isn’t cured once a patient leaves a treatment program. In order to stay sober, they need to keep on working to cope with cravings, avoid triggers, and keep their sobriety at top-of-mind. An aftercare program like 12-step groups or outpatient treatment is designed with this principle in mind. And with a professional program, you'll have a direct connection to these invaluable aftercare sources.

Emotional & Motivational Support – Last but not least, a professional program will also provide the emotional and motivational support that’s so critical during recovery. One-on-one counseling, group talk sessions, immediate psychological care, and even social get-togethers all help to keep recovering addicts happy, supported, and motivated to recover.

What Kinds of Programs Are There?

In general, there are two primary treatment stages when it comes to addiction: detoxification and rehabilitation. Both are necessary for recovery. And when they're handled by a qualified program, both can contribute to a much greater rate of success.

Addiction affects both the body and the mind on a fundamental level. Both must be treated in order to fully recover. And detox handles the body side of things.

This initial stage of treatment is when the body first begins to acclimate to working normally without the substance of abuse. And depending on the severity of the addiction, it can be an incredibly uncomfortable process.

Physical symptoms like nausea, vomiting, chills, fever, tremors, fatigue, and muscle aches are common with many drugs. And psychological ones like irritability, anxiety, depression, and even psychosis can all develop along the way too. These are called withdrawals. And they can be debilitating.

In fact, these symptoms are so uncomfortable that many people trying to quit end up turning back to using again just to get a bit of relief.

A professional detox program will help ease these symptoms. And in some cases, they can even make the duration of this stage shorter too.

And once the body has readjusted to functioning without the drug in its system, the patient can move on to the mental side of treatment in a rehabilitation program.

After detoxification comes rehabilitation. And this is where a lot of the real work of recovery begins.

While detox is often marked by physical and mental discomfort, rehab is about changing behaviors that have become so ingrained in an addict that they hardly have any control over them at all.

One-on-one counseling, group talk, and behavioral therapies are three of the main treatment methods used during rehab. And with the right amount of dedication, they can be the key to preventing relapse further down the line.

There are a couple different kinds of rehab programs to choose from: inpatient, outpatient, and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs). Each has their own pros and cons. And each will work for some people and not for others.

Inpatient RehabAn inpatient program is what most people imagine when they think of rehab. Patients are confined to the facility for a certain amount of time (usually 30 days) and eat, sleep, and go through treatment all on the program campus.

The stricter environment allows for a more focused approach to treatment while also reducing the risk of relapsing since patients are always in a drug-free zone. But most patients won’t be able to attend school or a job at the same time. And that can make it a much more disruptive way to recover for some.

Outpatient RehabilitationOutpatient rehab offers flexibility where inpatient does not. Patients still receive regular treatment. But these treatment sessions only occur in the evenings several times a week. These programs usually last about 3 months.

The benefit, of course, is that recovering addicts can go about their daily life as usual for the most part (job, school, family, etc.). However, the risk of relapse is higher since the environment isn’t controlled 24/7 and the treatment isn’t nearly as extensive.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs)An IOP attempts to bridge the gap between inpatient and outpatient. Recovering addicts in these programs attend evening treatment sessions, just like with an outpatient program. However, sessions generally last longer and occur more frequently. It’s a higher level of care compared to outpatient, though not as high as an inpatient program.

Surprisingly, there aren’t many addiction treatment options in Columbine, Colorado to choose from. And in fact, besides a single nearby sober living home, most residents of this city will have to travel to find an actual professional treatment center.

But even when it does come time to travel for treatment, how do you know which program is going to be right for you? Do you just focus on price? Or how close it is? What else is there to consider?

Finding the right treatment program can be a bit of a daunting task when you don’t know what to look for. And while price and location should definitely be part of an informed decision, there’s a lot more to narrowing down your options than just those qualities.

In the end, the absolute best program is going to be one that meets the specific needs of the patient.

Below is a list of questions that can help find out if a program meets those needs. And while it might seem like a lot of work, finding the right treatment program now can dramatically improve the chances of recover later.

  • What kinds of services do you offer (detox, inpatient/outpatient/IOP rehab, residential)
  • Do you have 24/7 nursing care?
  • Is your program medication or holistic in nature?
  • Do you treat co-occurring disorders?
  • Are you nationally accredited?
  • Do you have individualized treatment plans?
  • Do you have staff experienced in treating your specific kind of addiction?
  • Do you accept my insurance?
  • What is your success rate?
  • Do you offer aftercare referral services?
  • How long does your program last?
  • What is your staff-to-patient ratio?

Anytime an addict decides that they've had enough and starts looking for help, it is a good thing that benefits not only themselves and their families, but society as a whole. There may be many barriers to taking that first step, but not having the money or other financial resources should not be one of them.

Unfortunately, many addicts believe that professional detox and rehabilitation programs are simply out of reach for them due to cost. They may think that they’ll have to borrow money from a friend or family member. Or even worse, take out a loan.

However, the world of addiction treatment has come a long way in recent years. And today, treatment is actually more affordable than ever.

This is due in part to new laws enacted in just the past several years. Two in particular worth mentioning are the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA).

These two laws now make it legally required for most health insurance providers to cover at least some form of addiction treatment. Coverage still varies from provider to provider, so always be sure to verify insurance coverage before partnering with any program.

But even still, some people won’t have to end up paying more than a small deductible for the entire length of their treatment.

These laws also have an effect on federal health insurance programs like Medicare and Medicaid too.

On top of that, most facilities also offer a range of payment options to make treatment much more affordable. These might include:

  • Flexible payment plans
  • Financing options
  • Sliding-scale programs
  • Grants
  • Scholarships
  • Private referrals

In the end, there are plenty of ways to make treatment much more affordable.

And when you compare the cost of treatment to the cost of a drug problem, the right financial choice is obvious.
